Cheap tinted stickers turn glasses into sunglasses

There are many options for adding a solar-quality tint to a pair of prescription glasses, from clip-on glasses to light to dark electrochromic glasses. Colorado start-up EyKuver has a different idea that’s lighter, simpler, fairly affordable, and quite intuitive: Easily removable tint film patches that fit over individual eyeglass lenses and create temporary sunglasses to block UV light.

With roots in medical device manufacturing and engineering, EyKuver founder Marcus Boggs has formulated a patent pending custom film specifically for the purpose of bringing capabilities from sunglasses to prescription eyewear. EyKuver Film Patches do not use chemical adhesives and instead are designed to “cling” to lenses like a non-stick window sticker, cutting glare and blocking UVA and UVB rays.

The EyKuvers are designed to peel off as easily as they are pressed, without leaving residue or damaging the lenses in any way. The company says they can be discarded after removal or reused later, recommending washing them before reuse to make sure they don’t retain any dirt or grit that could scratch eyeglass lenses.

EyeKuver has developed two sizes that it believes will fit around 80% of prescription glasses, although it admits that many lens wearers won’t get a precise, personalized fit. Instead, the EyKuver will end up a little too big or too small for the lens.

Designing a custom fit kit might seem like an easy fix to the fit problem, but EyKuver doesn’t market the product as a permanent solution to turning old prescription glasses into sunglasses (which would also be very helpful). Instead, he imagines them serving as a temporary fix for times when someone forgets their sunglasses or clips, but still needs eye protection.

EyKuvers are inexpensive enough to be attractive as a temporary fix and small enough to fit in a purse, jacket pocket, or even a wallet, ensuring you always have a backup on the go. The pre-cut shape works better than a custom cut kit for these types of moving situations.

Having launched its product late last year, EyKuver is currently working to bring it to market, both locally in Colorado and on a larger scale. Based in Steamboat Springs, a mountain town in Colorado that calls itself both Bike and Ski Town USA, EyKuver focuses its advertising on the outdoor recreation and travel markets, where EyKuvers could serve as a useful accessory to keep outdoor enthusiasts on the move, even if they forget their primary prescription sunglasses.

So far, the EyKuvers are available in medium and large sizes and in gray and blue hues. EyKuver sells three packs on its website for US $ 9.99, or as low as $ 8.49 each on orders of three or more. Each individual package of the three-pack contains a pair of EyKuvers.
