Here’s the deal, if you ever decide to get out of the house and get away on a two-wheeler, be sure to wear a helmet. Leave out the awkward looking part; it just means you don’t know how badly you will end up healing a rash.
One of the issues a pilot may face when looking for a helmet is the price, but even that won’t be a problem if you know where to look. You can find a good helmet, DOT and ECE certified, and under $ 200.
Since most sane people don’t fly at racetrack speed and just want to be safe when cruising highways, HJC Helmets offers the C91 Solid Modular Brain Bucket. Why should you care about this pot? Well, like I mentioned, this is a road use helmet for under $ 200, depending on the dealer you bought it from. The MSRP of the C91 is around $ 165 (⬠135 at current exchange rates), but some dealers will sell it as high as $ 195 ($ 160).
If you have never heard of HJC, since 1971 this company has done nothing but devote all their attention, innovation and manufacturing experience to the production of helmets. Today, its products are sold all over the world, from the United States to Europe and Japan. One of the reasons for this success is HJC’s emphasis on making helmets affordable.
As it stands, the C91 is no exception to the above statement and includes several features to save your life in the event of a crash. One of the main features of the C91 is the advanced polycarbonate composite shell. Using CAD technology, HJC designed a lightweight helmet with a perfect fit, and best of all, it meets or exceeds DOT FMVSS 218 and ECE 22.05 requirements.
For testing, HJC includes energy attenuation, resistance to penetration, structural integrity of the chin strap, and labeling requirements. Obviously, it takes a lot more work to receive these certifications, like going through all of the steps in the US DOT’s 76-page testing manual. Nevertheless, an important thing to note is that this helmet is intended to absorb an impact and spread it over a larger area. As for ECE 22.05 certification, you can use this helmet in about 50 countries around the world. If you are in Europe and want to drive on the road, your helmet must have this certification.
Another feature of the C91 is an HJ-17 lens prepared by Pinlock offering 95% UV protection and a RapidFire shield replacement system. This ratchet system allows you to replace your shield without any tools quickly and easily. Inside the helmet, an integrated Black Dark Smoke sunscreen can be deployed by sliding a finger across the top of the helmet.
The interior features moisture-wicking SuperCool technology, which includes removable and washable crown and cheek pads. Goggle grooves are also in place for people like me who wear bifocal glasses every day, and even speaker pockets ready for Bluetooth Smart HJC functionality. ACS (Advance Channeling System) features top vent and bottom vent, as well as full front-to-back airflow to remove heat and moisture.
The last thing this helmet has in store is a movable chin bar. With the push of a button, the chin bar easily unlocks and lifts above the forehead, allowing you to have a full conversation with the people around, eat a meal, and even have a drink. I hope you do all of this while standing still. When you’re ready to go, lower the chin bar, listen for a âclickâ and you’re good to go.
Oh, and if you want to start living life in a constant adrenaline rush (riding a motorcycle), make sure you know what a good fit for your head means; otherwise, your helmet may not have any certification at all.
