False Myths About Presbyopia: Let’s Clear the Air

Certain factors predispose to presbyopia

FAKE. There are no predisposing factors. Pathology, in fact, is a physiological phenomenon that represents the natural evolution of the eye over the years and that, for this reason, everyone manifests itself approximately after the age of 40.

Presbyopia evolves early and continuously

FAKE. Presbyopia is a phenomenon that progresses gradually from 40 to 60 years old and finally stabilizes around 65 years old.

Certain medications prevent its onset

FAKE. Presbyopia cannot be treated with medication, either preventively or once symptoms have been confirmed.

With presbyopia it is possible to read and perform manual activities without glasses

FAKE. It often happens, out of laziness but above all for aesthetic reasons, that people do not wear glasses even if the ophthalmologist has recommended it to them.

This is a serious mistake because doing without it puts a lot of strain on the eye and does not allow clear vision.

Nearsighted people do not become farsighted

FAKE. Even nearsighted people after the age of 40 will become farsighted.

Myopia, which limits distance vision but allows near vision without accommodation, only allows presbyopic myopes to avoid reading glasses as soon as the first signs of the disease appear.
