All the talk about oil replacement in one generation is quite unrealistic.
This segment of What’s Ahead highlights that more than 6,000 products are petroleum-based, ranging from refrigerators, computers, insecticides and soft contact lenses to ballpoint pens, handbags, deodorants, lipsticks, perfumes, toothbrushes. and toothpastes.
Moreover, actually replacing fossil fuels would be an environmental disaster. Harnessing the necessary minerals would mean tearing up millions of hectares of virgin land and destroying the biodiversity therein.
There is also the annoying fact that manufacturing wind turbines, solar panels and batteries would require the use of immense amounts of non-renewable materials. Steel is not renewable. Not to mention the huge waste crisis we will be facing in 20 years time when all those batteries, wind turbines and solar panels wear out.
