Incredible 149 mph roller coaster requires cyclists to wear goggles to ‘protect’ themselves

The world’s fastest roller coasters reach a top speed of 149 mph in just 4.9 seconds, and cyclists are required to wear safety glasses to protect their eyes from impacts from insects or sand.

The Formula Rossa coaster, located in the Ferrari World theme park in Abu Dhabi, was built to mimic the Formula 1 experience and brave racers even sit in a cart shaped like an F1 supercar.

The fast roller coaster is inspired by the famous Autodromo Nazionale Monza track, which features a range of “sharp turns and sudden drops” capable of generating up to 4.8 G, Motor 1 reports.

“The purpose of the roller coaster is to bring the feeling of what a Formula 1 driver is going through,” said Claus Frimand, director of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.

“The incredible speed you will be brought in, you will fly across the landscape.

“Start in an air-conditioned environment, shot outside the building, run and come back inside the building.”

The Formula Rossa is the fastest roller coaster ever built and reaches a top speed of 149 mph (240 km / h), thanks to a state-of-the-art hydraulic launch system similar to the equipment that catapults steam-powered aircraft carriers , reports Oddity Central.

It won the title of world’s fastest roller coaster when it opened in October 2010 and nothing has managed to beat it since.

However, the top spot on the fastest roller coaster could be snatched soon as Falcon’s Flight, a roller coaster in Saudi Arabia, hopes to overtake it when it opens in 2023.

Earlier this month, a boy was rescued after he got stuck in a roller coaster cart at a theme park.

The terrifying incident happened at M&D Park in Motherwell, Scotland over the weekend.

Photos from the scene show the boy looking down as an engineer and a costumed colleague try to save him from the broken down ride.

The footage shows a crowd of spectators watching the dramatic moment as workers scale the Mad Mouse merry-go-round to reach the stationary car.

It is not known whether there were any injuries in the incident, which occurred around 6:20 p.m. Saturday and was due to a fault during the journey, a witness told the Daily Record.
