After tornado hit Amazon warehouse, several people were killed

Extreme weather conditions and tornadoes ravaged the Midwest and South on Friday night, including an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois. At least six workers have died and others are missing, according to Reuters.

In a Facebook post, the Collinsville Emergency Management Agency called the collapse a “mass casualty.” He then updated the post with a photo of the aftermath, showing the storm completely destroying the warehouse.

“How many people we actually had in this establishment at the time because it is not a permanent staff. Police Chief Mike Fillback said this morning. While Amazon management was on the site to help count the counted employees, Fillback says it’s still not clear how many people are still trapped in the collapsed building.

Reuters reports that at least 45 people escaped unharmed. Some were taken by bus to a safe area to reunite with relatives, while others left on their own (via NBC News). Authorities estimate 110 workers were inside the building at the time, according to NBC News.

Severe storms also hit other states. According to NBC News, 70 people died in Kentucky and one in Arkansas when a potential tornado damaged a healthcare facility. “Work with governors to make sure they have what they need as the search for survivors and the damage assessment continue,” President Joe Biden tweeted on Saturday morning.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos tweeted about it late Saturday night. “The Amazon team is committed to supporting Edwardsville and will be by their side during this crisis,” he wrote. That morning, Bezos was in Texas for his company’s rocket launch, which included former NFL star Michael Strahan.

Overcoming a severe tornado warning was unforgivable, said Stuart Appelbaum, president of the Union of Retailers, Wholesalers and Department Stores. It is unacceptable for the company to prioritize profits over the health and safety of employees.
