Over 31,000 Deer Harvested During Gun Season in Maryland | thebaynet.com | TheBayNet.com

Maryland hunters said they captured 31,390 deer during the popular two-week gun season. Despite mild weather statewide, rain on key hunting days resulted in an eight percent drop in harvest from last season. Over 3,200 deer were captured on Sunday hunting days.

“Scattered rains across the state on opening weekend, combined with warm weather throughout the season, made hunting conditions difficult this year,” said Paul Peditto, director of the service. wildlife and heritage. “With Sunday hunting available in most counties, hunters had more opportunities to adjust to these conditions and obtain the harvest needed to meet our deer management goals. “

During gun season, hunters reported capturing 20,041 antlerless white-tailed deer, nearly double the number of antlers captured (11,349). Focusing the harvest on antlerless deer remains a fundamental part of the effort to manage the people of Maryland.

The harvest of sika deer has declined, with hunters reporting 390 deer with antlers and 581 deer without antlers, up from 471 with antlers and 670 without antlers in 2014. The bag limit for sika deer without antlers was increased in 2014 in response to the increase in complaints of agricultural damage in the region. Hunters have responded favorably by killing more antlerless sika deer to help stabilize the population and reduce it to more acceptable levels in problem areas.

Hunters in Region A reported taking 3,965 white-tailed deer during the season, down slightly from 4,128 catches last year. The region’s harvest consisted of 2,643 deer with antlers and 1,322 deer without antlers.

Region B’s harvest was down eight percent from last year to 27,425 deer. The region’s total included 8,706 deer with antlers and 18,719 deer without antlers.

Junior hunters said they captured 2,537 deer during the junior deer hunting weekend in November, slightly above last year’s harvest. Junior hunters recorded 1,575 antlered deer and 962 antlerless deer in 2015.

Deer hunting dates, regulations and registration procedures can be found in the 2015-2016 Hunting and Trapping Guide. Additional information can be found on the Hunting in Maryland web page.
