The Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero appears in a new episode

AMC revealed a behind-the-scenes look at zombie creator Greg Nicotero’s walker transformation in Sunday’s new episode of The Walking Dead. The longtime FX series executive producer, director and special makeup artist appeared as a star walker in “The Lucky Ones,” which premieres March 13 on AMC and is streaming now on AMC+. In the sped up zombie makeup video, special effects makeup artist Gino Crognale transforms Nicotero into one of the attacking undead when Commonwealth Governor Pamela Milton (Laila Robins) visits the communities of Alexandria, Hilltop, and Oceanside.

The KNB EFX Group co-founder has made several zombie cameos as the flesh-eating walkers he helped create since the first season of The Walking Dead in 2010.

“I have a team of four permanent makeup artists. We’ve gotten to a point where we average about an hour and a half per character,” Nicotero said. CNN ahead of the third season of AMC’s 2012 zombie drama. have custom-made prosthetics; some people we love to do more rotten than others. It all depends on the character and what we want to do that day.

Explaining the process behind the zombie makeup, Nicotero continued, “Some days when we only have six or seven walkers, we can take a little longer with them, make them especially broken down. Days when we have 60s or 70s, we break it down where we have “hero” makeups, which are features, and “in between” makeups, which are paint jobs, where we paint highlights and shadows on their faces to make them look dead, but they’re not meant to get too close to the camera. And we have a ‘deep background’.”

“The Lucky Ones” airs Sunday, March 13 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and premieres early on AMC+.
